Original Instrument

Square piano by Longman & Broderip

Built in London in 1788, this original 18th century English square piano was sold by the Longman & Broderip company, who alter sold Haydn a grand piano. It has the special patent action developed by John Geib, which is commonly dubbed “English double action.” It is a great instrument for playing Haydn and other late 18th century repertoire.
The piano has three hand stops: divided damper lift, and buff stop. The pedal operates a lid swell mechanism.
The instrument was restored by Paul Kobald in Amsterdam in 2018.
